W SERIES PADDOCK GOES PINK FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

W Series announces a brand-new programme of initiatives in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Throughout October, W Series will turn pink to raise awareness of the world’s most prevalent cancer and fan-focused initiatives will aim to educate girls and women as to the importance of self-examination. In 2020, there were 2.3million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 deaths globally*. When diagnosed at its earliest stage, almost all (98 per cent) people with breast cancer survive the disease for five years or more, compared with 26 per cent of people when the disease is diagnosed at the latest stage**.

W Series will make bold statements in pink both online and on-track – highlighting a different breast cancer charity during each week of October, sharing special content featuring W Series’ drivers and staff, and giving the liveries of our racing cars a pink update for the final round of the season at the Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas, USA on 23 and 24 October.

W Series will also work in conjunction with the series’ technical racewear partner PUMA to help raise awareness and funds for non-profit Barbells for Boobs, whose mission is to improve the quality of life of individuals impacted by breast cancer through physical fitness. The campaign will come to a colourful conclusion at W Series’ spectacular season-ending double-header at COTA, where drivers will wear specially designed PUMA boots and gloves during Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix weekend.

Zandvoort W Series: Powell wins again to draw level with Chadwick

Alice Powell took her third W Series win of the season at Zandvoort, drawing level in the points standings with pre-event leader Jamie Chadwick as polesitter Emma Kimilainen finished third.

Starting second, Powell swept up the inside of Spa winner Kimilainen to take the lead at Turn 10 on lap six.

Chadwick (Veloce Racing) had looked sure to catch her fellow Brit at points, but Racing X’s Powell had built up a substantial lead at the 20-minute mark and crossed the line 2.8 seconds ahead after 20 laps.

The two title protagonists both sit on 109 points with two races to go at the Circuit of the Americas and Mexico City, although Powell has more three wins to Chadwick's two. Nearest rival Kimilainen sits 34 points behind.

W Series Academy driver Nerea Marti held her fourth position on the grid to the flag ahead of Jess Hawkins and Belen Garcia.

Kimilainen survived dipping a wheel into the gravel at Turn 12 on the formation lap to lead at the start, with Powell and Chadwick staying close behind her into Tarzan.

Behind the leaders, Belen Garcia took seventh at Turn 4 from a slow-starting Abbi Pulling - who had dropped from fifth in her second W Series start.

With five minutes complete, Kimilainen had built up a 1.1 second lead over Powell, while Chadwick followed close behind her.

The 2019 champion had set the fastest lap in the early stages, but Powell soon went quicker and closed rapidly on Kimilainen.

Powell sold Kimilainen the dummy at the Turn 10 left-hander on lap six, before Chadwick followed past onto the pit straight later around the same lap.

Kimilainen quickly fell back from the leaders, but held Marti at bay behind her, as Powell edged away from Chadwick.

With overtaking at a premium on the fast Zandvoort sweeps, Chadwick stayed behind to the flag as Powell scored her first win since Silverstone in July.

On the final lap, Powell's protege Pulling passed Garcia at Turn 3 in a great overtake to take seventh position.

Having missed last week's race at Spa after a huge qualifying shunt at Eau Rouge, Beitske Visser finished 12th - struggling all weekend with sore ribs and engine problems.

Bruna Tomaselli finished 17th after a formation lap spin.

W Series drops Mexico round, will hold Austin double-header

W Series will now hold two races at the US Grand Prix as its season finale, rather than also racing in Mexico, after changes to the Formula 1 calendar.

The all-female championship had been set to hold its next two rounds at the Circuit of the Americas on 23 October, and Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on 30 October.

But it will now race twice in Austin after Formula 1 moved the Mexico City race to the first weekend of November, citing logistical challenges. 

They are the series' first on-track races to be staged outside of Europe and will take place on 23 and 24 October, with a maximum of 50 points available from the two races.

After six rounds, Alice Powell and defending champion Jamie Chadwick are tied at the top of the championship standings on 109 points, with Emma Kimilainen in third place, 34 points behind.

Powell took victory during the last round at Zandvoort, taking the lead from Kimilainen to take the lead on lap six before holding off Chadwick for her third win of the season. 

W Series CEO Catherine Bond Muir said: "We are, of course, disappointed not to be able to conclude our 2021 season at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, where support for W Series and our mission is very strong.

"However, the changes to Formula 1's calendar would have resulted in a standalone W Series race there, which would have been logistically impossible for us.

"W Series' drivers have produced lots of wonderful racing already this year, seizing their opportunity to shine on motor racing's greatest stage.

"I know they will be going flat out again at COTA where everything will be on the line and a grandstand finish to the season is guaranteed with Alice Powell and Jamie Chadwick level on points at the top of the championship standings."

Kimilainen: Οι αγώνες «δεν με καθορίζουν»

Λέει ότι αυτές οι επιπλέον ευθύνες έχουν αλλάξει την οπτική της με θετικό τρόπο και της επιτρέπουν να κοιτάξει πιο ρεαλιστικά τους αγώνες της.

Ο Kimilainen βρίσκεται αυτή τη στιγμή στην τρίτη θέση της βαθμολογίας οδηγών, με δύο αγώνες να ακολουθούν στο Circuit of the Americas στο inστιν και στο Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez στην Πόλη του Μεξικού, αφού πήρε μια συντριπτική νίκη στο βρεγμένο στο Spa.

«Και τότε αν η καριέρα σας τελειώσει κάποια στιγμή για κάποιο λόγο, όχι για δική σας απόφαση ή κάτι τέτοιο, μπορεί να είναι ένα σοκ για εσάς, ως αθλητή, επίσης - αν το έχετε κάνει μόνο αυτό και εσείς σκεφτείτε ότι είστε μόνο καλοί σε αυτό, τότε στο τέλος, όταν φεύγετε, μπορεί να υπάρχει ένα μεγάλο κενό στην καρδιά ή την ύπαρξή σας για μια ζωή.

«Νομίζω ότι είναι πολύ θετικό ότι οι αθλητές και ο εαυτός μου έχουν και άλλα πράγματα στη ζωή, και τότε συνειδητοποιείς ότι υπάρχει και μια μεγάλη εικόνα. Αυτό απαιτεί λίγη πίεση μακριά από τα αποτελέσματά σας και, στη συνέχεια, μπορείτε να το απολαύσετε πολύ περισσότερο.

«Πάντα στοχεύω σε μια νίκη, μου αρέσει να κερδίζω και μου αρέσει αυτή η δουλειά, είναι το πιο εκπληκτικό πράγμα στον κόσμο. Αλλά ταυτόχρονα, αν δεν κερδίσω, ποια είναι η διαφορά στη μεγαλύτερη εικόνα; »

Ο Kimilainen πήρε πόλο για τον πιο πρόσφατο γύρο στο Zandvoort, αλλά έπεσε πίσω στην τρίτη θέση στον αγώνα πίσω από τους διεκδικητές του τίτλου Alice Powell και Jamie Chadwick.

Το αποτέλεσμα της αφήνει 34 βαθμούς πίσω από το Βρετανό ζευγάρι, το οποίο βρίσκεται ισόπαλο στην βαθμολογία, ως ο μόνος άλλος οδηγός με μαθηματικές πιθανότητες να κερδίσει τον τίτλο.

«Στη συνέχεια, όταν θέλετε ακόμα να προσπαθήσετε από εκεί, εξακολουθείτε να προσπαθείτε υπερβολικά και είναι ένας δύσκολος δρόμος. Τα λάθη έρχονται ακόμη μεγαλύτερα και η απογοήτευση είναι αρκετά κακή, οπότε είναι δύσκολο να επιστρέψουμε από μια τέτοια βαθιά νοοτροπία.

«Απλώς μου αρέσει να το απολαμβάνω και τότε αυτός είναι ο τρόπος μου να το κάνω».
